Apartment Hunting Tips
Finding the perfect apartment is always a challenge. If you want to do it right, it is almost like a full time job and is quite the time commitment. Once you find your perfect new apartment, it is mostly smooth sailing from there...but getting there is the adventure.
Here are a few tips to help your apartment search go quicker, smoother, and easier:
1) Do Your Research- Don't just hit the pavement with no particular idea of where you would like to go. Use an online search tool or listing service to check out a few places first. Find some you like and give them a call and ask about their availability and specials. There is no sense in wasting gas going to check out places that you wouldn't be able to get into...so do your research online first.
2) Be Prepared- The hunt and the leasing process can be confusing at times with the abundance of information that you will need to provide. The best course of action in dealing with this is to be prepared. To best be prepared when you get there to avoid having to leave and go get other info, you will need a government issued form of ID, SS #, all the addresses of the former places that you have lived, three paycheck stubs, three bank statements, names and numbers of rental history references, and all of your additional basic info. I would also bring along the old check book in case you decide to put in a rental application that day. It seems like a lot, but you'll need it all in the process.
3) Go With the One You Love- This is going to be your home. You will want to pick an apartment that really speaks to you. Check out all of the amenities and features that each of your finalists have to offer. Do not dwell to long on making a decision between a few and never choose one thinking things will get better as you live there or you will get used to it. If you see an issue that doesn't sit right with you...rule that one out. There are so many different communities out there, that finding the right one is the key to happiness. So go with the apartment that you love.
Start there and you should have a successful search for you new apartment!
